When Tamar opened her eyes, she was lying on her stomach under the duvet. The digital alarm clock on the bedside table showed five-thirty a.m.

The space beside her was empty. Matt had disappeared.

Somehow she was neither surprised nor disappointed. Tamar closed her eyes again, exhaustion overcoming her.

Tomorrow would be a tough day, and she would need all the sleep she could get.

Chapter Six

Laptop bag over her shoulder, Tamar stepped out of the lift on the third floor and made her way down the corridor to the office of Tintagel Paranormal. It was eleven a.m., and the morning sun cast window-shaped light on the carpet, broken up by the outlines and shadows of city centre buildings.

Hana was already in place at her desk, sipping from a Starbucks cup, as Tamar walked in. With a ‘mouth full’ grunt she waved good morning and pointed towards the central table, which had several cups and Bagel Nash bags stacked on it. Tamar picked up a hot chocolate and one of the bags, taking them over to her desk in the corner.

“We’ve had a write-up sent in of the Meltham Hall night,” Hana said as Tamar was fitting her laptop into the docking station. “I emailed it over to you.”

“Cheers. I’ll upload it today.” Tamar unwrapped her bagel while she waited for Windows to start. Her stomach gave a grateful rumble as she bit into bacon and brown sauce.

It had been the best night’s sleep she had had in a long time, but today would not be an easy day. If Reed came in—which he didn’t always do—she would have to pull him aside and break up with him. And when Jason came in…

Well.

What she was going to say to him she had no idea.

While Dreamweaver was opening, she clicked on Outlook to check her emails. The file from Hana was top of the list. She quickly saved it to her own drive and opened it, ready to upload to the website. As she deleted the original email, the next one automatically opened.
